Workshop on Hazardous Waste Management Handling and Transboundary Movement Rules 2008
Friday, 21 August 2009, 12:00am - 11:59pm
In India there are 36,165 hazardous waste generating industries which generate 62,32,507 metric tons of Hazardous Waste per year (CPCB, 2009). Lack of financial and technological capabilities and non-availability of Common Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities has contributed to the mushrooming of illegal dumping of this waste and associated environmental and business risks. In view of the serious and irreversible damage potential of improper management of Hazardous Waste on the environment, flora and fauna and the health of human beings as well as animals, the Ministry of Environment and Forests notified the Hazardous Waste (Management, Handling and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2008 to supersede all earlier legislation on hazardous waste.

In order for the Industry to comply with the legislation on Hazardous Waste Management, the starting point is the understanding of the rules and how they impact their business. With this view, CII – ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forests is conducting workshops on the rules in the city of  Bhubneshwar in the month of  August. The key objectives of the workshop are to:

      Clarify and increase understanding of the rules and how they impact businesses and how best the industries can comply.
      Provide a platform for interaction between the Industry and the Regulatory bodies so that problems associated compliance of the rules can be addressed directly.

It is an excellent opportunity for the industry to get clarification and better understanding of the changes brought about in the new legislation directly from the implementing agencies (State and Central Pollution Control Boards) and the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The workshop will be beneficial to all industries generating hazardous waste, recyclers of all types of waste, regulatory bodies (State and Central Pollution Control Boards), TSDF operators, waste reprocessors and other stakeholders.
