What is the India Climate Portal ?

The India Climate Portal is the country's first dedicated site on climate change, bringing you daily news, views, action and resources. It is THE information hub and gateway to action on climate change.

Across India, communities are beginning to wake up to the reality of climate change. The objective of the Portal is to inform, connect and mobilize.

Addressing climate change requires action by each one of us, and this Portal is a tool in this essential effort. Developed as a public resource by the Centre for Social Markets, the Portal is designed as a one-stop-shop on climate change and India issues. It seeks to raise awareness, promote information exchange, and foster networking and partnership in the search for solutions to climate change.

The Portal has a built-in search engine to enable users to access our vast on-line library and other resources. Entries are being added on a daily basis and users are encouraged to post additional materials for the Portal.

The Portal is also multilingual and dedicated to assembling and making available resources in India’s vernacular languages. This seeks to avoid the dominance of English-language based materials and ensure accessibility for India’s non-English users.

Launched in June 2009 by the Indian non-profit, Centre for Social Markets (CSM), the India Climate Portal is one of several public service initiatives offered under CSM’s award-winning Climate Challenge India (CCI) programme.

The objective of the programme is to promote Indian leadership on climate change both at home and abroad. CCI has sought to do this through grassroots work, civic dialogue and business engagement since 2007. It seeks to build a strong, pro-active domestic agenda that will reduce the country’s climate risk while seizing opportunities for sustainable and equitable growth.

In addition to the India Climate Portal, the CCI programme brings out a number of resources including publications such as the monthly India Climate Watch bulletin, the annual Who's Who in Climate Change in India, the Discussion Paper series; and films such as In Good Company - profiling corporate leadership on climate change in India, and City Dialogues.

What is Climate Challenge India?

Climate Challenge India (CCI) is an independent, non-political mobilisation effort to spread awareness and promote action on climate change in India.

CCI seeks to build a new climate of hope and opportunity on climate change. The initiative's starting point is that countries such as India can no longer afford to sit back, but must take leadership on climate change out of enlightened self-interest.

In December 2007, Climate Challenge India was hailed as one of the world's top five climate campaigns and profiled at the UN Climate Summit in Bali, Indonesia.

In 2009, the focus of the initiative was to build the conditions necessary for a successful outcome to the crucial United Nations negotiations on climate change (COP15) in Copenhagen in December.
